When business and family are intertwined, something special can happen: A place that normally conducts mere transactions develops relationships instead. The Darien Sport Shop is one of those places—a store where, since 1946, a multi-generation family—the Zangrillos—has fulfilled its dream of providing true customer service and a fantastic shopping experience to every customer who walked through the doors. That’s what Stephen Zangrillo, affectionately known as Mr. Z, set out to do 65 years ago, and that's what the shop continues to do today under the leadership of his daughter Gina Zangrillo. The Darien Sport Shop, which started as a single-room store just down the Post Road from the existing flagship location, has created one of those rare havens that make customers feel welcome the minute they walk through the door. It is an unparalleled shopping environment: a crisp, spacious, comfortable three stories of fantastic brands, trend-setting items, classic fashion staples, and sporting equipment.
Thankfully some things never change at the Darien Sport Shop – you can still have all your gift packages wrapped at no charge (and even shipped for you all over the world), there is plenty of free parking, the sales associates greet you by name, and there’s even coffee and donuts to greet you on the weekends. The famous Darien Sport Shop Alteration Department has watched generations grow up, always offering free alterations on clothing purchased. Going the extra mile on customer service, they offer follow-up alterations when your child has a sudden growth spurt or you need a few inches taken away at your waistline (which are also complimentary services). One of the most charming aspects, if not the most subtle, is the lollipops! A tradition that Mr. Z. started, Gina and the staff are known for passing children lollipops, a small but kind gesture that always brings a smile to families. And lastly, it’s not unusual for weekend shoppers to find husbands chatting in the men’s department under the flat screen television, while their wives are trying on the newest dresses from Diane von Furstenberg or BCBG as their children scamper safely through the toy department.
Customers come back time and time again for the combination of prestige lines such as Peter Millar, Barbour and Vineyard Vines and the friendly smiles and warm reception only a family-run business can provide. Gina Zangrillo, now the President, is carrying on the Zangrillo mission to give the kind of personal attention, unhurried service, and convenience her father envisioned as their family legacy.
They are unwaveringly committed to building and developing relationships of integrity, honesty, and fairness with all these customers and with the associates, vendors, and the members of the community they serve. The Darien Sport Shop is a special shopping experience right around the corner where the best value is finding exactly what you need under one roof in an atmosphere of family, friends, fashion, and fun.
Over the past six decades, the Darien Sport Shop has been giving back to the community it has called home. The Zangrillos have been carrying on the tradition of philanthropy embraced since the store first opened in 1946 by adopting ways to not only contribute to people in need, celebrate those who shine, and protect the health of the environment, through numerous outreach initiatives throughout the year. Over the past six decades, the Darien Sport Shop has been giving back to the community it has called In addition, we continue to focus our giving with Fall and Spring shopping events to support many non-profit organizations. The store has long since adopted eco-friendly practices with their “Going Green” program, including the use of recycled and environmentally sound products for wrapping and packaging. The use of a Mercedes “Smart Car” delivers merchandise as well as the message to customers that we all must do our part.
Upstairs in the sports department, Steve Jr., son of Stephen Zangrillo, posts the weekly newspaper articles that feature the hometown teams and athletes. You will also find him as a volunteer coach and one of the founders of the Darien Challenger Little League with over 39 physically and mentally challenged kids now participating.
The Darien Sport Shop has been awarded a distinction from MR Magazine, a leading men’s fashion trade publication, as the recipient of the “Uptown/Downtown Achievement Award”. This honor is presented annually to a menswear retailer who has demonstrated extraordinary innovation and delivers “a consistent customer experience while building a strong reputation by supporting the communities that they serve.” Gina Zangrillo has been honored for her civic leadership as a businesswoman, community leader and athlete, and is a three time Volunteer of the Year by the Darien Chamber of Commerce and Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young. The store’s constant community outreach has resonates throughout the staff as a pride that shines through and a hallmark of service with a smile.
